RING warrior Councillor Len Ironside will be the special guest of honour when wrestling returns to the Granite City later this month.

The Aberdeen grappling great will be in attendance as local group WrestleZone present their biggest event of the year, Battle of the Nations, on August 18th at the Northern Hotel.

Cllr Ironside will be meeting fans and signing copies of his new book, “When You’re Ready Boys – Take Hold! My Grappling Story”, which tells the story of his battles inside the wrestling ring. For two decades, Len mixed it up with the cream of British wrestling including famous names like Big Daddy, Giant Haystacks and Johnny Saint.

Len did not let his small frame hold him back on his way to becoming a National, European and Commonwealth champion, and he is relishing the opportunity to see the current generation of Granite City grappling stars in action.

Cllr Ironside said: “It is a great personal honour for me to be invited along to the wrestling at the Northern Hotel.

“I am looking forward to seeing the current generation of wrestling athletes in action. There is a lot of good talent out there and the evenings’ contests are sure to be full of action and thrills.

“Once the bell goes, you are on your own and it will be god to see how these grapplers handle it. I am so looking forward to taking in the atmosphere, chatting to the fans, and seeing the all-action bouts.”

Cllr Ironside’s battles at the Music Hall and Beach Ballroom established him as one of the top wrestlers of the 1970s and 1980s, but Len’s passion for politics saw him first elected to the City Council chamber in 1982.

After clocking up over 300 professional bouts, the wrestler retired from the ring in 1992 to concentrate on his political career but he still holds fond memories of his battles in the squared circle.

Cllr Ironside added; “I used to love pitting my wits against bigger and heavier opponents; it was like a game of chess for me, nip and tuck all the way.

“I enjoyed being fit and tackling much more experienced guys than myself. I relied on my speed but I had a pretty good line in submission holds too!

“But the game was full of larger than life characters. That’s why I wrote the book. It is for the fans, the people who paid their money to see the contests, cheer their heroes and boo the rule-benders. I wanted to share some of the entertaining stories with them.”

Len will be watching the action closely as hometown grappler Scotty Swift teams with Glasgow grappler BT Gunn in the main event, to take on English pair Rob Cage and Dave Rayne.

Also in action will be the current tag team champions the Granite City Hotshots, Crusher Craib, Sterling Oil, Los Cystos and more.

Tickets for the event are available now from the Northern Hotel in Great Northern Road, priced Ā£10 for adults and Ā£7 for under 14s. Doors on the night open at 6.30pm with a special start time of 7pm.

“When You’re Ready – Take Hold! My Grappling Story” will be on sale at the event, priced £5.
